Abigail Johnson, a 16-year-old native of Ovilla, Texas, is following her grandparents’ footsteps
in the rodeo world through the competitive arena of rodeo queening. Johnson desires to continue
being an ambassador and role model for other young ladies following her year as the 2023 Ellis
County Livestock and Rodeo Teen Queen by throwing her hat in the running for the 2024 Miss
Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Queen title. One area of the competition that Johnson
was nervous about leading into the pageant was speech, as she had never presented a speech
before.

During her preparations, Johnson focused on practicing her speech to ensure she could
accurately convey her message. Another area Johnson was concentrating on was her
horsemanship, as she had only been working with her new horse for a year. Johnson’s hard work
in her speech and horsemanship practice paid off. On June 8, 2024, on the final day of the rodeo,
following a six-day-long competition, Johnson was crowned the 2024 Johnson County Sheriff’s
Posse Rodeo Queen after winning horsemanship, speech, modeling, photogenic, and Miss
Congeniality. Johnson’s goal with this new adventure is “to use [her] title to the full extent to do
whatever [she] can with it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jackie Scarry, Miss Rodeo California 2022
Jackie has had an unexpected but rewarding journey in her rodeo queen career. Starting her quest in 2004, inspired by a local rodeo queen, Scarry faced numerous challenges, particularly as she did not come from a rodeo family. Despite setbacks, she persisted, winning several titles including Miss Redding Rodeo and Miss Gold Country Pro Rodeo Queen. The pandemic extended her reign, pushing her to rediscover her passion. Ultimately, her perseverance paid off when she was crowned Miss Rodeo California 2022. Scarry’s platform focused on inspiring children, especially those outside the rodeo industry, encouraging them to pursue their dreams. She prepared rigorously for the Miss Rodeo America Pageant, drawing motivation from J.R.R. Tolkien’s quote, “Not all who wander are lost.” Post-reign, Scarry is pursuing a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice through California Baptist University, inspired by her family’s background in public safety with a long term goal of becoming a Crime Scene Investigator and Forensic Genetic Genealogy. Now, two years later, Jackie has transitioned to mentoring aspiring rodeo queens while continuing to explore new endeavors including being Secretary for Miss Rodeo California, Inc, interning with Past The Sash, and being a Media Ambassador for The Foundation for Western Professionals.
