Pugh’s road to professional rodeo has run through Sam Houston State University and the College National Finals Rodeo, where the experience of competing against the best college athletes in the country helped prepare him for the next level.
But one of the defining moments of his young career came at Cheyenne.
Pugh talks about the 5.3-second run that helped deliver the steer wrestling championship at the Daddy of ’em All and what it was like to leave one of rodeo’s most historic arenas with a Cheyenne title already on his résumé.
The conversation also turns to another kind of pressure: competing for the top position in the PRCA permit standings. Rather than simply entering rodeos and gaining experience, Pugh found himself with something to protect as the season progressed.
Now another transition begins.
With his permit season behind him, Pugh is preparing to become a PRCA cardholder and take on his first full season competing against the established names in professional steer wrestling.
Cheyenne showed that he can win on one of rodeo’s biggest stages.
The next question is how far he can climb.
